Off the beaten track in Kisoro

By a researcher from Iceland

If you are planning a trip to Kisoro (or to somewhere in the area) I truly recommend Experience Kigezi for the different tours and activities that they offer! Many people make the mistake of only doing Gorilla trekking when in this area, however the whole district is extremely beautiful and has so much to offer, and Experience Kigezi can help you make the most of your time. I stayed in Kisoro for six weeks and did several tours with those guys which were all great. It doesn‘t hurt that Richard and Godfrey, the two young cousins who run this social enterprise, are really fun, nice, and helpful. The tours are also very affordable, and all profit goes into community development, such as helping vulnerable women gain skills to sustain themselves and their families. So it is for sure money well spent 🙂

Some of the tours I did with them were a walking tour from town, through the villages and up the small mountain called Sagitwe, for a pretty view of the town and mountains around (an easy hike so perfect for those who are maybe not in their best shape), a motorcycle ride around the beautiful scenery of the district where you pass by lots of small mountain villages (and can take amazing photos). You also cannot miss enjoying a day by Lake Mutanda, which was my favorite place in Kisoro. So beautiful and peaceful, and a great place to swim, or even better, rent a kayak! What is lovely about the area of Kisoro is that it is still mostly undiscovered by tourists, so you can find the most amazing places and just enjoy peace and quiet.
