10 Days Gorilla & Culture

Beginning with the Kings palace in Nyanza, to the hot springs of Rugarama; Gisenyi orphanage, Lake Kivu, the Batwa, the genocide memorial; cultural centers and local crafts and artifacts give our guests a great insight into the traditions, cultures

and history of the Rwandese.  While you visit wildlife area like Nyungwe NP known for chimp tracking and the highest concentration of black and white Columbus monkeys, an assortment of butterflies and a collection of birds; and Volcano NP is famous for gorilla tracking and Golden monkeys.

Day 1: Arrival

On arrival, you will be met by our staff at Kanombe Airport in Kigali; he will help you with your luggage to the car. After check in to your hotel, he will brief you about Rwanda, your travel itinerary, culture and all other important information. And if time allows you can do city tour; the genocide memorial, crafts market and cultural centers.

 Day 2: Kigali – Butare.

After breakfast drive to Butare National Museum, Nyanza king’s palaces; all are well set-up to their finest ethnographic museum of East Africa. It is a vivid and good source of information about the cultural and traditional history of Rwanda. It displays monochrome pictures, traditional artifacts and objects, tools and different craft products.

 DAY 3: Butare – Nyungwe

After breakfast visit the Botanical Gardens, hot springs in Rugarama and Nyungwe NP. These will give you the most exciting nature and forest walks, tracking the chimpanzees, black and white Columbus monkeys, birds watching and an assortment of butterflies.

 DAY 4: Nyungwe Forest

After breakfast do community or nature walk; visit the community to see how they live, traditions, cultures and the social economics of these people as you watch a colorful array of birds like Rwenzori turaco and black and white casqued hornbill; enjoy a picnic lunch before returning back to you hotel  in the evening.

 DAY 5: Kibuye

 After lunch drive to Lake Kivu for relaxation through beautiful country side; valleys, Lake Kivu one of the deepest volcanic lakes of east Africa: take a boat and visit its Islands or swim to refresh up in these bilharzias free waters. Or just sit beside leisuring as you enjoy a wine at sun downer. A gas rich lake estimated to be having over 65 million cubic meters at the lake bottom and if exploited it would provide more than enough of the energy requirement for Rwanda.

 Day 6: Gisenyi

After breakfast, take a boat from Kibuye to Gisenyi; this gives you great encounter with the local population: the fishermen, fishing villages to be picked from Gisenyi for lunch. And if time allows visit Nyarigongo 2002 volcano eruption site in Goma as you marvel at the fantastic capabilities of the local population in overcoming disasters like these.

 Day 7: Gisenyi – Kinigi

 After breakfast visit Mugongo orphanage for genocide orphans established by Mrs. Rosamond Horsley Carr in 1994 and local villages along the lake, Lunch and  drive to Ruhengeri and Kinigi for an overnight at your hotel.

 Day 8: Gorilla Trekking

After your early morning breakfast, with packed lunch, go for registration at the park offices and be ready for briefing at 7:00 am. Walk up the steep densely forested hills before coming across the Gorillas camouflaged in the forest vegetation. This trek requires a reasonable degree of fitness as well as a sturdy pair of walking shoes. Sit in the forest among the Gorillas listening to them grumble to each other and marvel at the sheer size of the dominant male. It is amazing to think that there only 700 individuals of these beautiful creatures left in the world.

 Day 9: Golden monkey – Kigali

 Visit the Diana Fassey grave, an American lady who was studying Gorillas in this park but was fortunately killed and buried in this camp. You may track the golden monkeys, rare and endemic to the Virunga, community walk visiting the Batwa community or go bird watching to come back and drive to Kigali to arrive early enough for Dinner.

 DAY 10: Kigali and departure

 After breakfast visit the crafts market  in the city tour before settling down for lunch and departure.
